Enlisted in the Italian Army in World War II, Don Luigi Gargano was serving in Rome in the Macao Barracks when the American troops arrived - and one morning the bay of Salerno was full of American ships, as recalled by his wife Giovanna, after whom one of the two apartments in Casa Gargano is named. Don Luigi carried out his task with such commitment that he was awarded an honorary certificate signed "H.R. Alexander, Field-Marshall, Supreme Allied Commander, Mediterranean Theatre," which he proudly kept and which is now displayed in the apartment that bears his name. Finding the best of provisions was Don Luigi's lifelong passion, even when he traded in oils
assorted olive oils for the best hotels and restaurants on the Coast, something that, not only
among his customers, founded a reputation with which the Gargano family is associated
to this day.
